KING OF HEARTS

Chicago Sculpture Exhibit 2021-2022
in Lincoln Park

2441 N. Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL, USA

King of Hearts.jpg

Public Sculpture 10.5' x 3.5' x 2'
550 LBS

Inspired by the Black Lives Matters movement, I felt a personal calling to research and design a piece that personifies the beauty of black American men and women. The original concept began with a contemporary black female nude figure. I created both a male and a female form with a focus on the simple heart shape form made by our arms coming together in front of our body  when our hands are clasped.

This sculpture was designed without movement or energy to represent a quiet and calm shape. The base of the sculpture is shaped like the Adinkra ( African) symbol representing peacemaking.

I hope you enjoy the sculpture and it might inspire you to understand more intimately the struggles and beauty of black America.

INVERTADUDE

2020

This nearly twelve foot, 750lb concrete sculpture sits on the corner of Halstead and VanBuren in Greektown Chicago, with the Willis Tower and West Loop skyscrapers in the back ground. Invertadude is a contemporary piece that takes us back in time when carving figures in stone was common. He strikes a casual unassuming pose but on his head as if the world doesn’t matter. Our upside down world is a place to invert troubling thoughts as we adapt to our changing times.

Public Sculpture 13' x 11' x 7'

The inspiration for Lady of the Lake comes from the beauty and strength seen in many modern day SHEROes, also known as our lady heroes. Lady of the Lake leans into a common directional wind flow while balancing on her rock.  Currently on exhibit in downtown Rockford on the river for the biennial sculpture walk through 2023.

THE HELPING HAND

Palmer Square Chicago, IL USA

Public Sculpture 9' x 11' x 7'

Permanent installation in Palmer Square Park, Chicago IL, USA. This whimsical oversized hand and insect was designed for the City of Chicago Park District’s Tree Project in 2018.  As a member of the Chicago Sculpture International group I was invited to sculpt a tree in the program highlighting a diseased Emerald Ash. The  tree was infested with the Emerald Ash Borer larvae many years ago, died and was trimmed down to it's main trunk at 20ft.
The concrete sculpture consists of an oversized, grasping hand (11 foot long) emerging from the ground at the base of the dying tree. Just above the hand is the adult emerald ash borer also sculpted using concrete & copper.
